Where it is used

ESAB Origo Arc 455 applications and industries

  • Production and maintenance stick welding across a wide range of coated electrodes.
  • Welding carbon and alloyed steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminium and its alloys, copper and bronze — an unusually broad material list.
  • Heavy manufacturing and mining, where a simple rectifier with few electronics is valued over an inverter.
  • Continuous production at 230 A at 100% duty cycle.
  • Workshops that want a machine with no settings to get wrong: current is set by a single crank on the front panel.

Features

ESAB Origo Arc 455 features and capability

High open circuit voltage for easy striking

80 V open circuit on the 60 Hz supply, 79 V on 50 Hz. A high OCV makes the arc easy to strike and keeps it stable, which is what suits this machine to difficult electrodes and to welders of mixed experience. Note the trade-off: a high OCV machine is not one for confined-space work where VRD would be required.

Welds an unusually wide material range

Rated for carbon and alloyed steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminium and its alloys, copper and bronze. Cast iron and bronze in particular need a stable low-current DC arc, and few machines in this class name them.

Single crank current adjustment

Welding current is set by a crank on the front panel, allowing precise selection for the application. There is no menu, no digital panel and nothing to misconfigure — which on a shared shop machine is a genuine advantage.

Multi-voltage three-phase supply

Operates on 220, 380 or 440 V at 60 Hz, or 380 V at 50 Hz. Output differs between the two frequency bands and both sets of figures are published on this page.

Powerful cooling fan

A powerful cooling fan protects the internal components against excess temperature, which is what underpins the 230 A at 100% duty cycle rating.

Galvanised, electrostatically painted cabinet

A compact robust cabinet built in galvanised sheet and finished by an electrostatic antioxidant process — the right specification for a humid coastal environment.

OKC terminal connections

Welding cables connect by OKC terminal, which improves safety in the welding area compared with exposed bolted connections.

Frequently asked

ESAB Origo Arc 455 — common questions

What output does the Origo Arc 455 give on a UAE 50 Hz supply?

400 A at 36 V on a 35% duty cycle, 300 A at 32 V at 60%, and 230 A at 30 V continuously at 100%, from 380 V 50 Hz. The headline 450 A figure applies only on a 60 Hz supply, so the 50 Hz column is the one to quote against in the UAE.

What materials can the Origo Arc 455 weld?

Carbon and alloyed steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminium and its alloys, copper and bronze. That is a wider list than most machines in this class publish, and it follows from the high open circuit voltage and stable DC output.

Why does high open circuit voltage matter?

It makes the arc easy to strike and keeps it stable, which helps with difficult electrodes and with less experienced welders. The trade-off is that a machine with 79–80 V OCV and no VRD is not suitable for confined-space or wet work where reduced voltage is required.

Is the Origo Arc 455 an inverter?

No — it is a transformer-based welding rectifier. That means it is heavier (125 kg) and less efficient than an inverter, but with far fewer electronics to fail. For a shop that wants a machine that simply works for twenty years, that is often the point.

How is the welding current set?

By a single crank on the front panel, which allows precise selection of the parameter for the application. There is no digital panel and nothing to misconfigure.

What supply voltages does the Origo Arc 455 accept?

Three-phase at 220, 380 or 440 V on 60 Hz, or 380 V on 50 Hz. Fuse requirements differ: 80 A at 220 V, 50 A at 380 V and 40 A at 440 V.
