Why electrode holding matters
Low-hydrogen electrode coatings absorb atmospheric moisture, and that moisture becomes diffusible hydrogen in the weld metal. Hydrogen is the direct cause of cold cracking in hardenable steels, which typically appears hours after the weld is complete and after the inspector has left. A holding oven is the control for it, which is why welding procedures specify one.
