Welding consumables

Welding filler metals by AWS classification

A welding procedure specifies the consumable by its AWS classification, not by its trade name — so this index is organised the same way. Each page decodes one classification, sets out what it does and where it is used, and lists every ESAB grade that carries it with the differences that decide which one belongs on your job.

  • E7018

    AWS A5.1 / ASME SFA-5.1

E7018 is an iron-powder, low-hydrogen basic-coated stick electrode classified to AWS A5.1 for welding carbon and carbon-manganese steels, depositing weld metal with a minimum tensile strength of 70,000 psi (490 MPa) and a minimum 27 J Charpy V-notch impact value at −29 °C, in all positions on DC and, for the AC-capable grades, on alternating current.

  • E7016 / E7016-1

    AWS A5.1 / ASME SFA-5.1

E7016 is a basic low-hydrogen stick electrode classified to AWS A5.1 for welding carbon and carbon-manganese steel, depositing weld metal with a minimum tensile strength of 70,000 psi (490 MPa) and sharing the low-hydrogen coating of E7018 without its iron powder, which gives a more fluid and controllable weld pool at a lower deposition rate — the reason it is specified for pipeline root runs and positional work.

  • E6013

    AWS A5.1 / ASME SFA-5.1

E6013 is a rutile-coated general-purpose stick electrode classified to AWS A5.1 for welding mild and carbon-manganese steel, depositing weld metal with a minimum tensile strength of 60,000 psi (420 MPa), welding in all positions on both AC and DC, and chosen for its easy striking and re-striking, tolerance of rust and poor fit-up, and self-releasing slag rather than for low hydrogen or high toughness.

  • ER70S-6

    AWS A5.18 / ASME SFA-5.18

ER70S-6 is a manganese-silicon deoxidised solid wire classified to AWS A5.18 for gas metal arc welding and gas tungsten arc welding of carbon and carbon-manganese steels, depositing weld metal with a minimum tensile strength of 70,000 psi (490 MPa) and carrying the highest manganese and silicon content of the A5.18 carbon steel wires, which is what lets it weld over mill scale and light rust with low spatter.

Solid MIG wire & TIG rod (GMAW / GTAW) · 8 ESAB grade s

  • ER70S-3

    AWS A5.18 / ASME SFA-5.18

ER70S-3 is a manganese-silicon deoxidised solid wire classified to AWS A5.18 for gas metal arc and gas tungsten arc welding of carbon and carbon-manganese steels, depositing weld metal with a minimum tensile strength of 70,000 psi (490 MPa) and carrying less manganese and silicon than ER70S-6 — which gives a flatter bead on clean prepared plate but less tolerance of mill scale, rust and surface contamination.

  • E71T-1

    AWS A5.20 / ASME SFA-5.20

  • E71T-5

    AWS A5.20 / ASME SFA-5.20

E71T-5 is a basic (lime-fluoride) flux-cored welding wire classified to AWS A5.20 for carbon and carbon-manganese steel, depositing weld metal with a minimum tensile strength of 70,000 psi (490 MPa) and giving substantially better low-temperature impact toughness and lower diffusible hydrogen than a rutile E71T-1 wire, at the cost of a harsher arc and slag that is harder to remove.

    AWS A5.18 / ASME SFA-5.18

E70C-6M is a metal-cored welding wire classified to AWS A5.18 for carbon and carbon-manganese steel — a tubular wire filled with metal powder rather than flux, depositing weld metal with a minimum tensile strength of 70,000 psi (490 MPa) under an argon-CO₂ mix on DC electrode positive, and combining the near-slagless deposit of a solid wire with deposition rates and gap-bridging closer to a flux-cored wire.
