Where it is used

ESAB WeldScanner Validator applications and industries

  • Annual validation and calibration of welding equipment to IEC 60974-14, carried out in-house instead of sending machines away or waiting for a visiting service engineer.
  • Procedure qualification record (PQR) work, capturing the full run-sheet of parameters — time, current, voltage, consumption, heat input and interpass temperature — automatically rather than by hand.
  • Production control in compliance with DIN EN 1090, using the built-in oscilloscope to identify error sources.
  • Validating equipment from any manufacturer, not only ESAB — relevant to any shop running a mixed fleet.
  • TIG equipment testing, which the instrument is HF proof for.
  • Submerged arc welding at 1400–2000 A with the SAW package.

Features

ESAB WeldScanner Validator features and capability

Validates any brand to IEC 60974-14

The Validator validates and calibrates all brands of welding equipment in accordance with IEC 60974-14, the standard for validation of arc welding equipment. For a fabricator running machines from several manufacturers, one instrument covers the whole fleet.

Eliminates human error in PQR records

Documenting a PQR run-sheet with the WeldScanner significantly eliminates human error by providing accurate and untampered data. Hand-recorded welding parameters are copied from a display by someone watching an arc; captured data is simply what happened, and that distinction matters when a PQR is challenged.

Measures what the procedure is written in

Welding current, welding voltage and wire feed speed as standard, with gas flow rate and travel speed as options. Heat input and interpass temperature are recorded. These are the variables a WPS is actually specified in, so the record maps directly onto the procedure.

Correct measurement of square wave arcs

Capable of measuring all welding arc types, using True RMS and Rectified Average Mean Value for square waves. A meter that only reads True RMS will misreport a square wave output, which is exactly what modern inverter and pulsed machines produce.

HF proof for TIG

High frequency proof, so TIG equipment can be tested safely. HF ignition destroys instrumentation that is not designed for it.

Automatic validation certificates

Measuring reports are available as PDF and validation certificates are created automatically, with a welding power source and customer database built in. For a service department this removes the document preparation that usually takes longer than the measurement.

Delivered calibrated, traceable to national standards

Supplied as a calibrated system and intended for annual recalibration — ESAB offer laboratory recalibration at 0.5% — which maintains compliance with the standards and traceability to national standards. Recalibration part numbers are listed in the ordering table.

Works with standard load resistors

Operates with all load resistors and is pre-programmed with settings for the RC500 and Checkmaster 9000, so it drops into an existing calibration setup rather than requiring a new one.

Frequently asked

ESAB WeldScanner Validator — common questions

What is IEC 60974-14 and why does it matter?

It is the international standard for validation of arc welding equipment — the procedure by which a welding machine is confirmed to be delivering the current and voltage it indicates. Many fabrication contracts and quality systems require periodic validation to it, and a machine that drifts out of tolerance invalidates the procedures welded on it.

Can the WeldScanner Validator calibrate non-ESAB machines?

Yes. It validates and calibrates all brands of welding equipment to IEC 60974-14, which is the point of it for a shop running a mixed fleet.

Which Validator package do I need?

BASIC (HKS0002803) covers GMAW, GTAW and SMAW at 350/500 A. SAW (HKS0002804) covers submerged arc at 1400/2000 A. FULL (HKS0002805) covers both. If you do not weld SAW, BASIC is the package.

Does the Validator issue calibration certificates?

Yes — validation certificates are created automatically and measuring reports are available as PDF, with a built-in welding power source and customer database. For a service department this removes most of the paperwork around a calibration.

How often does the Validator itself need recalibrating?

Annually. ESAB offer laboratory recalibration at 0.5% under part numbers HKS0002323 (BASIC), HKS0002324 (SAW) and HKS0002325 (FULL), which maintains compliance with the standard and traceability to national standards.

Can it be used on TIG machines?

Yes. The instrument is high frequency proof and can safely test TIG equipment — HF ignition would otherwise damage measuring equipment not designed for it.

Will it measure a pulsed or inverter machine correctly?

Yes. It measures all welding arc types using both True RMS and Rectified Average Mean Value, which is what is needed to read square wave outputs correctly. An instrument offering True RMS alone will misreport a square wave.

Do I need a load resistor as well?

Yes, for calibration you need a resistive load. The Validator works with all load resistors and is pre-programmed for the RC500 (HKS0001536) and Checkmaster 9000. The Checkmaster 600R is the current ESAB load bank and automates load switching.
