Features

Callington CalCheck VP-2S Visible Penetrant features and capability

High-intensity red dye for sharper indications

The dye brings flaws into sharper, clearer focus with more intense colour against the white developer background. On a borderline indication, the difference between a confident call and a re-test is contrast, and this is where a visible penetrant earns its place.

Reliable across a wide temperature range

CalCheck VP-2S performs more reliably over a greater range of temperatures than conventional visible penetrants — directly relevant to UAE and GCC site inspection, where surface temperatures vary widely between a shaded workshop and a steel component in open sun.

High surface wetting for rapid capillary action

High surface wetting gives rapid surface coverage and maximum capillary action, so the penetrant is drawn into tight surface-breaking defects quickly. Dwell time is 5 to 30 minutes depending on the governing procedure.

Low sulfur and chloride content

Meets stringent low sulfur and chloride requirements. This is mandatory for inspection of austenitic stainless steel and nickel alloys, where residual sulfur and halogens can cause stress corrosion cracking — and it is the specification QA/QC departments check first.

Long-lasting indications with less fading

Flaw mark indications last longer with less fading, which matters when a weld has to be photographed, witnessed by a third-party inspector or signed off some time after development.

Non-corrosive across a wide material range

Suitable on a wide range of materials and components without corrosion, including ferrous and non-ferrous metals, ceramics and glass.

Five-year shelf life in aerosol form

Shelf life is 60 months from the date of manufacture, and the product ships as a self-contained 400 ml aerosol. For a store holding consumables against unplanned inspection, that combination means stock does not expire between campaigns.

Complete the three-step system

  • A complete penetrant inspection requires all three products. Order them together to avoid a part-kit arriving on site.

Operating essentials

Setting up and operating the Callington CalCheck VP-2S Visible Penetrant

Step 1 — Prepare the surface

Shake the aerosol thoroughly so the contents are consistently mixed, and clear the nozzle before use. Clean the test area with CalCheck R-2S Cleaner/Remover, allow 30 seconds dwell time, then wipe from the surface with a clean, dry, lint-free rag or towel.

Step 2 — Apply the penetrant

Hold the can approximately 20 cm from the surface and apply a thin even film of CalCheck VP-2S to the test area. Ambient temperature and wind, if working outdoors, will require that distance to be adjusted for optimum performance. Allow 5 to 30 minutes dwell time, as defined by the governing procedure.

Step 3 — Remove excess penetrant

Remove excess penetrant from the test area using a lint-free cloth moistened with CalCheck R-2S Cleaner/Remover, and allow to dry. Do not spray remover directly onto the surface at this stage — the object is to remove surface penetrant without drawing dye back out of the discontinuities.

Step 4 — Develop and inspect

Spray CalCheck D-2 Developer directly onto the test area and allow 10 to 30 minutes development time as defined by the procedure. Inspect under suitable visible lighting. Afterwards, remove all penetrant from the test area by cleaning with CalCheck R-2S.

Procedure authority

These directions describe the basic process only. They may need to be amended by the user to comply with the applicable specification and inspection criteria provided by the contracting agency. Where this sheet and your approved written procedure differ, the written procedure governs.

Frequently asked

Callington CalCheck VP-2S Visible Penetrant — common questions

What standards does CalCheck VP-2S comply with?

ASME BPVC Section V, ASTM E165 and AMS 2644. The product also meets stringent low sulfur and chloride requirements, which is what allows it to be used on austenitic stainless steel and nickel alloys.

What are the three steps of the CalCheck penetrant system?

CalCheck R-2S Cleaner/Remover (1563/400) first, to prepare the surface; CalCheck VP-2S Visible Penetrant (1561/400) second, applied and left to dwell 5 to 30 minutes; and CalCheck D-2 Developer (1562/400) last, left 10 to 30 minutes before inspection. R-2S is used again at the end to clean the part.

How long should CalCheck VP-2S penetrant dwell?

Between 5 and 30 minutes, depending on the requirement in your written procedure. The technical data sheet gives the range; the governing procedure or contracting agency specification sets the figure you must use.

Is CalCheck VP-2S safe on stainless steel?

Yes. It meets stringent low sulfur and chloride requirements and is stated as suitable on a wide range of materials without corrosion. Low halogen and sulfur content is the specific property required when inspecting austenitic stainless steel and nickel alloys, where residual contaminants can contribute to stress corrosion cracking.

What is the shelf life of CalCheck VP-2S?

60 months — five years — from the date of manufacture. Batch numbers are printed on the bottom of the aerosol can, and a Certificate of Conformance is supplied with the product or can be downloaded from the manufacturer.

What is the flash point of CalCheck VP-2S?

104 °C. It is nonetheless classified as an extremely flammable aerosol in a pressurised container, and must be kept away from heat, sparks and open flames, and never pierced or burned even after use.

Can CalCheck VP-2S be used outdoors in UAE site conditions?

Yes, and it is formulated to perform reliably over a greater range of temperatures than conventional visible penetrants. Note that ambient temperature and wind will change the spray distance needed for an even film — the data sheet’s nominal 20 cm needs adjusting outdoors. Do not store or leave cans above 50 °C.
