Where it is used

Callington S-Weld Clean Pickling Gel applications and industries

  • Removing the black oxide scale and heat tint left either side of a weld on stainless steel, which if left in place is where pitting corrosion starts.
  • Duplex and super duplex fabrication, where longer pickling times are required and are given explicitly in the table below.
  • Inconel 625 and other high-nickel alloys, where the high corrosion resistance means dwell times must be established by trial rather than assumed.
  • Vertical and overhead welds — the gel is thickened for high adhesion so it stays where it is brushed.
  • Food, pharmaceutical and process plant fabrication where a clean passive surface is a hygiene and corrosion requirement, not a cosmetic one.

Features

Callington S-Weld Clean Pickling Gel features and capability

Conforms to ASTM A380

ASTM A380 is the standard practice for cleaning, descaling and passivating stainless steel parts, equipment and systems. Conformance is what lets a fabricator cite the treatment in an inspection and test plan rather than describe it as "cleaned".

High-adhesion gel for vertical and overhead work

The thickened gel formulation adheres to vertical and overhead surfaces, so a weld on the underside of a vessel or the side of a column can be pickled in place. A liquid pickle runs off and needs the component rotated; a gel does not.

One-step treatment

A single-step treatment that removes black welding scale, discolouration and corrosion from stainless steel, leaving a clean, professional finish on the weld area.

Supplied with an acid-resistant brush

Each pack comes complete with an acid-resistant application brush. Controlled brush application eliminates the product wastage that spraying a corrosive gel would cause, and keeps the acid off areas that do not need treating.

Completely water rinseable

Fully water rinseable, so there is no extra solvent cleaning stage and no time lost. Rinse with clean potable water, ideally with a high-pressure jet.

Suitable for stainless, duplex and Inconel

Works on 200, 300 and 400 series stainless steels, duplex and super duplex grades, and Inconel 625. Pickling times differ substantially between them, and the table on this page gives the published figures.

  • Pickling removes scale and heat tint; passivation restores the chrome oxide layer that gives stainless steel its corrosion resistance. ASTM A380 treats them as separate operations, and most specifications require both.

Operating essentials

Setting up and operating the Callington S-Weld Clean Pickling Gel

Step 1 — Prepare

Clean the weld area carefully using a stainless steel brush. Roll or shake the drum for 30 seconds before opening to ensure a smooth consistency, particularly if the product has not been used for some time. After welding, allow the area to cool below 40 °C before pickling.

Step 2 — Apply

Apply the gel with the acid-resistant brush provided. Do not pickle in direct sunlight. Do not allow the pickling agent to dry on the surface — if it does, wash down, dry and repeat the process.

Step 3 — Dwell

Use the pickling time table on this page as the starting point. Times vary with ambient temperature, the grade of stainless steel, surface finish and welding method: a hot rolled surface may increase pickling time by 50%, and MIG welds may need longer than welds made with covered electrodes. At high ambient temperatures, or where longer times are needed, it may be necessary to repeat the process.

Step 4 — Do not over-pickle

The best results come from continuous visual inspection of the surface. Over-pickling damages the finish and is not recoverable by further treatment — which is why the manufacturer prints the warning in capitals.

Step 5 — Rinse thoroughly

Rinse with clean potable water, ideally using a high-pressure water jet, and make sure no pickle residue is left on the surface. In environmentally sensitive areas use the bucket and rag method instead: wash and wipe down with a wet clean rag, then a dry clean rag, repeating until the surface is clean and free from acid.

Establishing times for Inconel

S-Weld Clean can be used on Inconel 625, but its very high corrosion resistance means dwell time is longer than for 300 series and must be established rather than assumed. Produce test plates using the materials and methods of normal fabrication, apply the gel, and inspect at intervals starting from 25 minutes until the required result is reached. Use that as the benchmark.

Frequently asked

Callington S-Weld Clean Pickling Gel — common questions

How long should stainless steel be pickled with S-Weld Clean?

5 to 30 minutes for 200, 300 and 400 series stainless at 21–50 °C; 60 to 90 minutes for duplex; 80 to 120 minutes for super duplex. Inconel 625 takes longer than 300 series and should be established by time trial starting at 25 minutes. A hot rolled surface may add 50%, and MIG welds generally need longer than welds made with covered electrodes.

What safety equipment do I need to use pickling gel?

Protective gloves and clothing, eye and face protection, and use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. The manufacturer also instructs you to obtain a supply of calcium gluconate gel before use — that is the specific first-aid treatment for this class of acid burn, and it needs to be on site before the work starts, not ordered afterwards. The product is fatal if swallowed, inhaled, or in contact with skin.

Can S-Weld Clean be used on vertical and overhead welds?

Yes. It is a thickened high-adhesion gel formulated specifically so it stays on vertical and overhead surfaces rather than running off.

What is the difference between pickling and passivation?

Pickling removes black oxide scale, heat tint and surface contamination left by welding. Passivation then restores and enhances the chrome oxide layer that gives stainless steel its corrosion resistance. They are separate operations under ASTM A380, and most specifications require both — S-Weld Clean for the first, S-Weld Passivator Gel for the second.

Why must you not pickle in direct sunlight?

Heat accelerates evaporation and the gel can dry on the surface, which both stops the reaction and leaves residue that is difficult to remove. If the product does dry on the surface, wash it down, dry it and repeat the process.

How do I rinse off pickling gel?

With clean potable water, ideally a high-pressure jet, making sure no residue is left. Where the work is in an environmentally sensitive area, use the bucket and rag method: wash and wipe with a wet clean rag, then a dry clean rag, repeating until the surface is free from acid.

Does S-Weld Clean work on duplex and Inconel?

Yes — it is suitable for stainless steels, duplex steel and Inconel alloys. Duplex needs 60–90 minutes and super duplex 80–120 minutes, against 5–30 minutes for standard 300 series. Inconel 625 requires a time trial to establish the benchmark.
