Where it is used

Callington S-Weld Spatter Guard applications and industries

  • Protecting the interior and exterior of MIG nozzles, contact tips and gas diffusers, where spatter build-up restricts shielding gas flow.
  • Coating base metal either side of a weld so spatter lifts off instead of fusing, removing the grinding or chipping step afterwards.
  • Fabrication where components are painted or powder coated after welding — the silicone-free formulation does not cause coating adhesion defects.
  • Welding jigs, fixtures and clamps that accumulate spatter and eventually lose dimensional accuracy.
  • Enclosed workshops, where a non-flammable anti-spatter is preferred on fire-safety grounds over a solvent-based one.

Industries

  • Industrial and General Fabrication
  • Structural Steel Fabrication
  • Shipbuilding and Offshore

Features

Callington S-Weld Spatter Guard features and capability

Non-flammable, so workshop safe

S-Weld Spatter Guard is non-flammable, which is an unusual property in an anti-spatter aerosol and the main reason to choose it. Spraying a flammable product in the immediate vicinity of a live arc is a hazard that fabrication HSE departments increasingly refuse to accept.

Silicone free and paintable

Contains no silicones, which means no painting or powder coating problems downstream. Silicone contamination is a notorious cause of fisheye and adhesion failures in coating, and it usually appears long after the welder who sprayed it has moved on.

Protects the whole torch front end

Used on the interior and exterior of nozzles, the end and outer surface of contact tips, diffusers and the base of the nozzle support. Spatter build-up in a nozzle restricts gas flow, and restricted gas flow causes pitting and porosity — so torch protection is weld-quality control, not just housekeeping.

Extends consumable life

Increases the life cycle of welding torch components, which reduces both the consumable spend and the number of production stops to change wear parts. On a shop running several machines, that downtime is usually the larger of the two costs.

Eliminates post-weld grinding

Avoids the need for mechanical abrasion or grinding of weld spatter after welding. Removing a grinding operation removes labour, consumables, noise, dust and the risk of a grinder gouging the parent material.

Contains corrosion inhibitors

The formulation includes corrosion inhibitors for base metal protection, so treated surfaces are not left vulnerable between welding and the next process.

Suitable across steels and alloys

Suitable for a wide range of materials including mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium and high-performance alloys, and sprays as a uniform film with no air bubbles.

Operating essentials

Setting up and operating the Callington S-Weld Spatter Guard

Application to base metal

Hold the can approximately 30 cm from the surface to be protected and spray a thin, uniform coating over the area where spatter is expected to land. A thin film is sufficient; a heavy application wastes product and takes longer to wipe off.

Application to the welding torch

Before welding, spray a thin uniform film from approximately 30 cm onto the areas to be protected: the interior and exterior of the nozzle, the end and outer surface of contact tips, and all other areas subject to spatter. It is also advisable to spray the diffuser and the base of the nozzle support.

Before painting

Wipe the surface with a clean cloth to remove the anti-spatter film before painting. Although the product is silicone free and does not cause coating defects, the film itself should still be removed so the coating bonds to clean metal.

Handling

Obtain special instructions before use and wear protective gloves, clothing, eye and face protection. Do not eat, drink or smoke while using the product. Store locked up, out of sunlight, in a well-ventilated place.

Frequently asked

Callington S-Weld Spatter Guard — common questions

Is S-Weld Spatter Guard flammable?

No. It is a non-flammable anti-spatter aerosol, which is why it is described as workshop safe. It does contain gas under pressure and may explode if heated, so it must still be kept away from heat and stored in a well-ventilated place.

Can you paint over a surface treated with S-Weld Spatter Guard?

Yes — the product contains no silicones, so it does not cause the painting or powder coating problems silicone-based anti-spatters are known for. Wipe the surface with a clean cloth to remove the film before painting.

How do I use anti-spatter on a MIG torch?

Before welding, spray a thin uniform film from about 30 cm onto the interior and exterior of the nozzle, the end and outer surface of the contact tip, the diffuser and the base of the nozzle support. This prevents spatter build-up that restricts shielding gas flow and causes pitting and porosity.

What is the difference between S-Weld Spatter Guard and CalGuard?

S-Weld Spatter Guard (1450/454) is a 454 g non-flammable aerosol of proven Australian formulation. CalGuard (1400 series) is a water-based, biodegradable anti-spatter available in aerosol, trigger pack and bulk up to 200 L, and CalGuard Nozzle Dip Gel (1460/400) is a gel for dipping torch nozzles. All are silicone free and paintable. Ask us which suits your process and volume.

Does anti-spatter really extend contact tip and nozzle life?

Yes, and the mechanism is straightforward: spatter accumulating inside a nozzle restricts shielding gas flow, which causes pitting and porosity in the weld and eventually forces a wear-part change. Preventing the build-up both protects weld quality and reduces the number of production stops.

What size does S-Weld Spatter Guard come in?

A 454 g aerosol can, part number 1450/454, packed 12 units per carton. The water-based CalGuard alternative is available in 400 ml and 750 ml aerosols and 5 L, 20 L and 200 L bulk.
