Where it is used

Callington CalCheck B-MAG Black Magnetic Particle applications and industries

  • Weld inspection on ferromagnetic steel for surface and near-surface cracking, under ordinary visible light with no darkened area required.
  • Drill pipe, tool joint and rig equipment inspection, where MPI is the routine method and work happens in daylight.
  • Inspection with either stationary bench units or portable yokes and prods — the aerosol suits both.
  • Site and field inspection where a fluorescent method would need a blackout tent and a UV lamp with a verified irradiance reading.
  • Castings and forgings where surface-breaking and slightly subsurface discontinuities must be found before machining.

Features

Callington CalCheck B-MAG Black Magnetic Particle features and capability

Black oxide particles for visible-light inspection

Black magnetic oxide suspended in a highly refined light petroleum oil. Particles rapidly collect at leakage fields produced by discontinuities in ferromagnetic material, forming black indications readable under ordinary visible light — no UV lamp, no darkened enclosure, no irradiance verification.

SAE sensitivity of 6 holes

B-MAG achieves a sensitivity of 6 holes on the SAE ring test. That is the standard quantitative measure of a magnetic particle system’s ability to resolve small subsurface discontinuities, and it is the figure a procedure writer compares when qualifying a consumable.

Fine particle size for defined indications

Particle size ranges from 0.5 to 4.0 µm with an average of 1.5 µm. Finer particles are more mobile in the suspension and migrate more readily to weak leakage fields, which is what produces a defined indication at a tight crack rather than a vague smudge.

Low background for high contrast

The suspension has a low background colour, so indications stand out. Used over CalCheck WCP white contrast paint, the combination gives black particles on a bright white matt background — the highest contrast available in visible-light MPI.

Fast acting and easily agitated

Particles are easily agitated and fast acting, producing defined indications quickly and accurately. Suspension stability matters: particles that settle and will not re-disperse give inconsistent results between the first and last part of an inspection run.

Works with stationary and portable equipment

Suitable for use with both stationary magnetic test benches and portable equipment such as yokes and prods, so the same consumable covers workshop and field inspection.

Broad specification compliance

Complies with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section V, AMS 2641, AMS 3041, AMS 3042, AMS 3043, ASTM E3024, ASTM E709 and ISO 9934-2 — covering both the pressure equipment and aerospace specification families.

Complete the magnetic particle kit

  • B-MAG with WCP contrast paint is the standard visible-light kit. F-MAG is the fluorescent alternative and is used instead of B-MAG, not alongside it.

Operating essentials

Setting up and operating the Callington CalCheck B-MAG Black Magnetic Particle

Step 1 — Clean and apply contrast paint

Clean the test surface and allow it to dry. Apply CalCheck WCP white contrast paint to the area being inspected, following the directions for the contrast paint, and allow roughly 20 seconds for it to dry.

Step 2 — Agitate and apply

The longer B-MAG is stirred or agitated, the more uniform the spray. Apply a liberal coating to the inspection area so there is sufficient magnetic particle to flow over the surface. Allow the excess fluid to run off.

Step 3 — Inspect

Inspect the surface under visible light. Collections of black magnetic particles reveal discontinuities at the leakage fields.

Step 4 — Repeat in a second direction

Clean and repeat the process with the magnetising direction changed. A discontinuity lying parallel to the magnetic field produces little or no leakage field, so a single orientation is never a complete inspection — this step is a code requirement, not a refinement.

Procedure authority

These directions describe the basic process only. They may need to be amended by the user to comply with the applicable specification and inspection criteria provided by the contracting agency. Where this sheet and your approved written procedure differ, the written procedure governs.

Frequently asked

Callington CalCheck B-MAG Black Magnetic Particle — common questions

What is the difference between B-MAG and F-MAG?

B-MAG is black oxide and is read under ordinary visible light, usually over WCP white contrast paint, with SAE sensitivity of 6 holes. F-MAG is fluorescent, read under ultraviolet light in a darkened area, with higher SAE sensitivity of 7 holes. Use B-MAG for routine site and daylight inspection; use F-MAG where the procedure requires maximum sensitivity.

What SAE sensitivity does CalCheck B-MAG achieve?

6 holes on the SAE ring test. This is the quantitative measure a procedure writer uses when qualifying a magnetic particle consumable against a specification.

Do I need white contrast paint with B-MAG?

Not strictly, but it is the recommended sequence and it is step 2 of the manufacturer’s own directions. Black particles on bare grey steel are difficult to read; black particles on CalCheck WCP white contrast paint give the highest contrast available in visible-light MPI.

What particle size does CalCheck B-MAG use?

0.5 to 4.0 µm with an average of 1.5 µm, suspended in a clear highly refined light petroleum distillate with a viscosity below 3 cSt at 38 °C.

Which standards does CalCheck B-MAG comply with?

ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section V, AMS 2641, AMS 3041, AMS 3042, AMS 3043, ASTM E3024, ASTM E709 and ISO 9934-2.

Can B-MAG be used with a portable yoke?

Yes. It is suitable for both stationary magnetic test equipment and portable equipment, so the same aerosol covers bench inspection and field work with a yoke or prods.

Why do I have to inspect twice in different directions?

A discontinuity lying parallel to the magnetic field produces little or no leakage field and will not attract particles. Re-magnetising at roughly 90 degrees to the first direction is what catches those defects, and it is a requirement of ASTM E709 and ASME Section V rather than an optional extra.
