Where it is used

Callington CalCheck F-MAG Fluorescent Magnetic Particle applications and industries

  • Aerospace component inspection to ASTM E1444 and the AMS 3044–3046 family, where fluorescent sensitivity is normally mandated rather than optional.
  • Drill pipe, tool joint and downhole equipment inspection in a controlled bay, where maximum sensitivity to fine fatigue cracking is the objective.
  • Critical weld inspection where the procedure calls for a fluorescent method and the inspection area can be darkened.
  • In-service crack detection on highly stressed components, where the defects of interest are tighter than a visible method will reliably resolve.
  • Inspection with either stationary bench equipment or portable yokes and prods.

Features

Callington CalCheck F-MAG Fluorescent Magnetic Particle features and capability

SAE sensitivity of 7 holes

F-MAG achieves 7 holes on the SAE ring test, against 6 holes for the black B-MAG. That one step is the practical reason to accept the cost of a darkened area and a UV lamp: it resolves finer and deeper-lying discontinuities than a visible-light method will.

Yellow-green fluorescence under UV

The particles are brown in daylight and fluoresce yellow-green under ultraviolet light. Yellow-green sits at the peak of dark-adapted human eye sensitivity, which is why every fluorescent NDT system in use converges on that colour.

Low background colour for high contrast

A low background colour keeps the unindicated surface dark under UV, so an indication reads as a bright line against black. Contrast, not brightness alone, is what makes a fine crack detectable.

Fast acting and easily agitated

Particles are easily agitated and fast acting, producing defined indications quickly and accurately. Consistent re-dispersion matters across a long inspection run, where settled particles would make later parts less sensitive than earlier ones.

Works with stationary and portable equipment

Suitable for both stationary magnetic test benches and portable equipment, so the same aerosol serves a dedicated inspection bay and a site yoke inspection.

Aerospace and pressure equipment compliance

Complies with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section V, AMS 2641, AMS 3044, AMS 3045, AMS 3046, ASTM E1444, ASTM E3024, ASTM E709 and ISO 9934-2 — covering both the aerospace and pressure equipment specification families.

Alternatives and related consumables

  • Do not order WCP contrast paint for use with F-MAG. A white background is used to make black particles visible in daylight; under ultraviolet light it serves no purpose and works against the dark background a fluorescent method depends on.

Operating essentials

Setting up and operating the Callington CalCheck F-MAG Fluorescent Magnetic Particle

Step 1 — Clean

Clean the test surface and allow it to dry. No contrast paint is applied for a fluorescent inspection — the method depends on a dark background under UV, which a white coating would destroy.

Step 2 — Agitate and apply

The longer F-MAG is stirred or agitated, the more uniform the spray. Apply a liberal coating to the inspection area so there is sufficient magnetic particle to flow over the surface, then allow the excess fluid to run off.

Step 3 — Inspect under ultraviolet light

Inspect the surface under ultraviolet light. Collections of fluorescent magnetic particles reveal discontinuities at the leakage fields, appearing yellow-green against a dark background. Allow time for dark adaptation before interpreting — reading too soon is a common cause of missed indications.

Step 4 — Repeat in a second direction

Clean and repeat the process with the magnetising direction changed. A discontinuity lying parallel to the field produces little or no leakage field, so a single orientation is never a complete inspection.

Procedure authority

These directions describe the basic process only. They may need to be amended by the user to comply with the applicable specification and inspection criteria provided by the contracting agency. Where this sheet and your approved written procedure differ, the written procedure governs.

Frequently asked

Callington CalCheck F-MAG Fluorescent Magnetic Particle — common questions

Should I use F-MAG or B-MAG?

F-MAG is more sensitive — SAE 7 holes against 6 — but it requires ultraviolet light and a darkened inspection area. B-MAG is read in ordinary light over white contrast paint and suits site and daylight work. If your procedure specifies a fluorescent method, or calls up ASTM E1444 or the AMS 3044–3046 family, use F-MAG.

Do I need white contrast paint with F-MAG?

No, and you should not use it. Contrast paint provides a white background so black particles are visible in daylight. A fluorescent method needs a dark background under UV, so a white coating works against it. WCP is for B-MAG only.

What colour do F-MAG indications appear?

Yellow-green under ultraviolet light. The particles themselves are brown in ordinary daylight. Yellow-green is used because it sits at the peak sensitivity of the dark-adapted human eye.

What standards does CalCheck F-MAG comply with?

ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section V, AMS 2641, AMS 3044, AMS 3045, AMS 3046, ASTM E1444, ASTM E3024, ASTM E709 and ISO 9934-2.

What is the particle size of CalCheck F-MAG?

2.0 to 5.0 µm with an average of 3.0 µm, in a clear highly refined light petroleum distillate with viscosity below 3 cSt at 38 °C. Aerosol particle concentration is 0.15 to 0.3 ml.

Can F-MAG be used with portable equipment?

Yes — it works with both stationary magnetic test benches and portable equipment such as yokes and prods, provided the inspection area can be darkened sufficiently for UV interpretation.
