Where it is used

Callington CalCheck WCP White Contrast Paint applications and industries

  • Magnetic particle inspection of welds on ferromagnetic steel where the particle colour is close to the colour of the parent material.
  • Weld inspection to ASME BPVC Section V and ASTM E709 under visible light, without a darkened area or UV equipment.
  • Drill pipe, tool joint and rig equipment inspection, where MPI is the routine method for surface and near-surface cracking.
  • Site inspection in daylight, where a fluorescent method would need a blackout tent.
  • Any MPI application where indications are being photographed for a report and need a uniform background.

Features

Callington CalCheck WCP White Contrast Paint features and capability

High contrast for visible-light MPI

WCP provides a high-contrast white background that enhances the visibility of indications under visible light conditions, specifically where the background material has a similar colour to the particles. Black magnetic particles on grey steel are hard to read; black particles on a white coating are not.

Fast drying for quick processing

The paint dries in approximately 20 seconds depending on ambient temperature, which allows quick processing time. On a production inspection where dozens of welds are being examined in sequence, drying time is the rate-limiting step.

Resistant to wet suspension fluids

When dry, WCP is resistant to the wet suspension fluids used in magnetic particle inspection, so the contrast background survives application of the suspension rather than washing away with it.

Low residual odour

Formulated for low residual odour, which matters for a more operator-friendly environment when inspecting inside vessels, tanks and other confined spaces.

Solvent removable

Easily removed with CalCheck R-2F Cleaner/Remover after inspection, so the component can be returned to service or passed to coating without an aggressive cleaning step.

Aerosol format for field work

Greater convenience and portability in aerosol form — no mixing, no decanting and no power supply required at the inspection location.

  • WCP is the white background for the visible-light method and is used with B-MAG. It is not used with the fluorescent F-MAG, which needs a dark background under ultraviolet light.

Operating essentials

Setting up and operating the Callington CalCheck WCP White Contrast Paint

Step 1 — Prepare and coat

Clean the test surface and allow it to dry. The longer WCP is stirred or agitated before use, the more uniform the spray will be. Apply a thin coat to the inspection area from approximately 150 mm from the surface.

Step 2 — Allow to dry

Wait approximately 20 seconds for the paint to dry, depending on ambient temperature. The coating must be dry before magnetising, or the suspension will disturb it.

Step 3 — Magnetise and apply suspension

Magnetise the area to be inspected. Ensure continuous agitation of the suspension fluid; if using an aerosol suspension, shake vigorously before and during inspection. Apply the suspension to the test part and allow excess oil or water to run off the inspection area.

Step 4 — Inspect and repeat

Inspect the surface under visible light. Collections of particles reveal discontinuities at the leakage fields. Clean and repeat the process with the magnetising direction changed — a defect lying parallel to the field will not produce a leakage field, so a single orientation is never a complete inspection.

Procedure authority

These directions describe the basic process only. They may need to be amended by the user to comply with the applicable specification and inspection criteria provided by the contracting agency. Where this sheet and your approved written procedure differ, the written procedure governs.

Frequently asked

Callington CalCheck WCP White Contrast Paint — common questions

What is white contrast paint used for in NDT?

It provides a high-contrast white background for magnetic particle inspection, so that dark magnetic particles are clearly visible against the surface. It is used where the parent material is a similar colour to the particles, which on bare steel is almost always the case.

Is CalCheck WCP for penetrant testing or magnetic particle testing?

Magnetic particle testing (MT/MPI). It is not part of the CalCheck dye penetrant system — for penetrant inspection you need CalCheck VP-2S penetrant, R-2S cleaner/remover and D-2 developer. WCP complies with ASTM E709 and ISO 9934-2, which are magnetic particle standards.

How long does CalCheck WCP take to dry?

Approximately 20 seconds, depending on ambient temperature. It must be fully dry before the part is magnetised and the suspension applied.

Will the magnetic particle suspension wash the contrast paint off?

No. Once dry, WCP is resistant to wet suspension fluids. It is removed afterwards with CalCheck R-2F Cleaner/Remover.

What standards does CalCheck WCP comply with?

ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section V, ASTM E709, ASTM E3024 and ISO 9934-2.

What is the temperature limit for CalCheck WCP?

4 °C to 50 °C (39 °F to 122 °F) in use. Cans must be protected from sunlight and never stored above 50 °C — worth noting for a UAE site store or a vehicle left in the sun.
