Where it is used

Callington CalCheck D-2 White Developer applications and industries

  • The developing step of any solvent removable visible penetrant inspection to ASME BPVC Section V or ASTM E165.
  • Weld inspection where indications must be read and photographed against a uniform white background.
  • Field and site inspection, where a quick-drying ready-to-use aerosol avoids the mixing and agitation a wet developer requires.
  • Inspection of components that must be returned to service clean — D-2 is removed by light brushing or a spray water rinse.
  • Inspection of austenitic stainless steel and nickel alloys, where the low sulfur and chloride formulation is required.

Features

Callington CalCheck D-2 White Developer features and capability

Wicks penetrant out of the defect

The developer quickly wicks out penetrant entrapped in surface defects. This is the mechanism that makes a hairline crack visible: the developer draws the dye back to the surface and spreads it sideways, so an indication is far wider than the defect that produced it.

Thin, uniform, bright white matt coating

D-2 covers the test surface completely as a thin, uniform, bright white matt coating. A matt finish rather than a gloss one is deliberate — it eliminates specular reflection under inspection lighting, which is what lets a faint indication be seen at all.

Obliterates background interference

The coating enhances penetrant contrast by obliterating background interference, so red indications are read against white rather than against mill scale, grinding marks or weld texture. Easy indication detection is a direct function of that contrast.

Quick drying and ready to use

Easily re-dispersible and quick drying in a ready-to-use formulation. There is no mixing, no suspension to maintain and no settling to manage, which is the practical difference between an aerosol developer and a wet developer bath on a site job.

Easily removed after inspection

Removed by light brushing or a spray water rinse, so the component can be returned to service without an aggressive cleaning step. CalCheck R-2S is used for final cleaning where a solvent clean is specified.

Low sulfur and chloride content

Meets stringent low sulfur and chloride requirements, which is mandatory when inspecting austenitic stainless steel and nickel alloys where residual contaminants can contribute to stress corrosion cracking.

Operating essentials

Setting up and operating the Callington CalCheck D-2 White Developer

Before developing

The surface must already have been cleaned with CalCheck R-2S, had CalCheck VP-2S penetrant applied for its 5 to 30 minute dwell, and had excess penetrant removed with a lint-free cloth moistened with R-2S. The surface must be dry before the developer is applied.

Applying the developer

Shake the aerosol thoroughly so the contents are consistently mixed, and clear the nozzle before use. Spray D-2 directly onto the test area from approximately 20 cm, as a thin even film. Ambient temperature and wind will require that distance to be adjusted outdoors.

Development time

Allow 10 to 30 minutes development time, based on the requirement in the governing procedure. Inspect the test area for discontinuities under suitable visible lighting. Indications grow during development, so reading the part too early can under-call a fine defect.

After inspection

Remove the developer by light brushing or a spray water rinse. Where a solvent clean is specified, remove all penetrant and developer from the test area with CalCheck R-2S.

Procedure authority

These directions describe the basic process only. They may need to be amended by the user to comply with the applicable specification and inspection criteria provided by the contracting agency. Where this sheet and your approved written procedure differ, the written procedure governs.

Frequently asked

Callington CalCheck D-2 White Developer — common questions

How long should CalCheck D-2 developer be left before inspection?

10 to 30 minutes, depending on the requirement in your written procedure. Indications continue to grow during development, so inspecting before the specified time risks under-calling a fine defect.

How does a penetrant developer actually work?

It wicks penetrant back out of the defect by capillary action and spreads it sideways into the white coating. That is why an indication appears much wider than the crack that produced it, and it is why the developer step cannot be skipped — without it most surface-breaking defects are simply not visible.

How is CalCheck D-2 removed after inspection?

By light brushing or a spray water rinse. Where a solvent clean is required, use CalCheck R-2S Cleaner/Remover to take off all remaining penetrant and developer.

What standards does CalCheck D-2 comply with?

ASME BPVC Section V, ASTM E165 and AMS 2644. It also meets stringent low sulfur and chloride requirements for use on austenitic stainless steel and nickel alloys.

Does CalCheck D-2 need mixing or agitation?

Shake the can thoroughly before use so the contents are consistently mixed, but it is otherwise a ready-to-use, quick drying, easily re-dispersible formulation. There is no suspension to maintain as there would be with a wet developer bath.

What is the flash point of CalCheck D-2?

6 °C. It is an extremely flammable aerosol in a pressurised container, causes serious eye irritation, and may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Wear eye protection and keep away from all ignition sources.
