Callington CalCheck R-2S is a non-halogenated cleaner and penetrant remover used to prepare the test surface before dye penetrant inspection and to remove excess penetrant afterwards, supplied in a 400 ml aerosol and compliant with ASME BPVC Section V, ASTM E165 and AMS 2644.

Where it is used
Features
R-2S removes excess penetrant with ease without removing dye from the discontinuities. Over-washing is the most common way a penetrant inspection produces a false negative, because the indication is cleaned out of the defect before it can be developed — and a solvent formulated for the job is the control for it.
The formulation is non-halogenated and complies with low sulfur and low halogen requirements. For austenitic stainless steel and nickel alloys this is mandatory, not optional: residual halogens and sulfur can contribute to stress corrosion cracking in service.
R-2S evaporates completely and rapidly and leaves no residue, which is what makes it suitable as both pre-cleaner and post-cleaner. Any residue left on the surface before penetrant is applied would interfere with capillary action into the defect.
The same can prepares the surface at step 1 and cleans the part at the end of the process. Consumption is therefore higher than the penetrant or developer, which is worth allowing for when ordering a kit.
Greater convenience and portability in aerosol form — no tanks, no decanting and no power required, which is what makes field and rope-access inspection practical.
Shelf life is 60 months from the date of manufacture. Batch numbers are on the bottom of the can and a Certificate of Conformance is supplied with the product.

Operating essentials
Shake the aerosol thoroughly and clear the nozzle before use. Holding the can approximately 20 cm from the surface, clean the test area, allow 30 seconds dwell time, then wipe from the surface with a clean, dry, lint-free rag or towel. Ambient temperature and wind will require the spray distance to be adjusted outdoors.
After the penetrant has dwelled for its specified 5 to 30 minutes, remove excess penetrant using a lint-free cloth moistened with R-2S, then allow to dry. Moisten the cloth rather than flooding the surface: spraying remover directly onto the part at this stage risks washing dye back out of the discontinuities and losing the indication.
After inspection is complete and results are recorded, remove all remaining penetrant and developer from the test area by cleaning with R-2S, so no residue is left on the finished component.

Use a lint-free cloth moistened with R-2S — not a direct spray onto the component. Spraying remover straight at the surface can wash dye back out of the discontinuity, which is the most common cause of a missed indication in solvent removable penetrant inspection.
ASME BPVC Section V, ASTM E165 and AMS 2644 — the same three specifications as the VP-2S penetrant and D-2 developer it is used with.
6 °C. It is classified as an extremely flammable aerosol and must be used only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, away from heat, sparks and open flames, with eye protection and protective gloves.
More than one per kit in most cases. R-2S is used twice in each inspection — once to prepare the surface and once to remove excess penetrant — plus again to clean the part afterwards, so it is consumed faster than the penetrant or developer.
