Where it is used

Callington CalGuard Nozzle Dip Gel applications and industries

  • Protecting the interior and exterior of MIG nozzles and the end and outer surfaces of contact tips, where spatter build-up restricts shielding gas flow.
  • Robotic and automated welding cells, where a dip station is simpler to integrate into a cycle than a spray and wastes far less product.
  • High-duty-cycle production welding, where nozzle cleaning intervals govern how often the cell has to stop.
  • Welding positioners and fixtures that accumulate spatter and eventually lose dimensional accuracy.
  • Fabrication that is painted or powder coated afterwards — the gel is silicone free and paintable.
  • Work on steel, aluminium and alloys alike.

Features

Callington CalGuard Nozzle Dip Gel features and capability

Controlled usage with no wastage

Dipping applies product only where it is needed, which is the main practical advantage over an aerosol. An operator spraying a nozzle inevitably coats the surrounding area and the air; a dip transfers a measured film to the part that matters and nothing else.

Non-toxic and user friendly

Callington describes the gel as generally considered non-toxic, which makes it straightforward to site a dip pot at the welding station. Refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet for acute and chronic health information before writing it into a method statement.

Silicone free and paintable

Contains no silicones, so it does not cause the fisheye and adhesion failures that silicone contamination produces in paint and powder coating — defects that typically surface long after the welding is finished and are expensive to trace.

Ready to use, no mixing

Supplied ready to use with no mixing or dilution, in a 400 g container packed 12 units per carton. There is no preparation step to get wrong and no dilution ratio to drift.

High flash point

Flash point is above 220 °C (PMCC) with a boiling point above 350 °C, which is a meaningful safety margin for a product that is deliberately applied to a hot nozzle.

Suitable across steels and alloys

Ideal for steel, aluminium and alloys, so one consumable covers a mixed fabrication shop.

Extends torch consumable life

Preventing spatter adhering to the nozzle and contact tip keeps shielding gas flow unrestricted. Restricted gas flow causes pitting and porosity in the weld, so this is weld-quality control as much as consumable economy.

Operating essentials

Setting up and operating the Callington CalGuard Nozzle Dip Gel

Before starting

Ensure the nozzle is clean and free from weld spatter, and replace any worn components first. Dipping a nozzle that already has spatter adhering to it traps the build-up rather than preventing it.

Dipping

Start to weld briefly to heat the nozzle. When the nozzle is hot, dip it into the CalGuard gel and drain off any excess if necessary. The gel is designed to be applied to a hot nozzle — that is what makes the film form and adhere.

During production

Continue to re-dip the nozzle to maintain an even coat, as often as the work requires. There is no fixed interval; the coat is maintained by observation.

Storing the torch

Avoid build-up of gel in the diffuser by storing the torch pointing downwards when not in use. Gel accumulating in the diffuser restricts gas flow — the exact problem the product exists to prevent.

Frequently asked

Callington CalGuard Nozzle Dip Gel — common questions

How do you use nozzle dip gel?

Make sure the nozzle is clean and worn parts are replaced. Weld briefly to heat the nozzle, then dip the hot nozzle into the gel and drain off any excess. Re-dip as required during production to maintain an even coat. The nozzle must be hot — dipping a cold nozzle does not form a proper film.

Should I use dip gel or anti-spatter spray?

Both, for different jobs. Dip gel treats the torch front end with controlled usage and no overspray, which suits production and robotic cells. A spray such as S-Weld Spatter Guard is needed for base metal, fixtures and positioners, where dipping is impossible.

Is CalGuard Nozzle Dip Gel paintable?

Yes — it is silicone free, so it does not cause the paint and powder coating adhesion problems silicone-based products are known for.

Is nozzle dip gel safe to use?

Callington describes it as generally considered non-toxic and user friendly. Its flash point is above 220 °C (PMCC), a substantial margin for a product applied to a hot nozzle. Refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet for acute and chronic health information before writing it into a method statement.

Why does gel build up in the diffuser?

Excess gel runs back down the nozzle when the torch is left pointing upwards. Store the torch pointing downwards when not in use. Build-up in the diffuser restricts shielding gas flow, which is precisely what the product is meant to prevent.

What size does CalGuard Nozzle Dip Gel come in?

A 400 g container, part number 1460/400, packed 12 units per carton.
