Where it is used

Grindex Coated Fibre Discs applications and industries

  • Weld and braze blending, where the weld has to disappear into the parent material.
  • Metal mismatch correction, levelling a step between two plates.
  • Cladding burr removal.
  • Gas cut surface blending — taking the dross and drag lines off a flame-cut edge.
  • Gear de-burring.
  • Flat stock finishing after planing in woodworking, and edge blending or chamfering in furniture making (silicon carbide).
  • Edge finishing of glass (silicon carbide).

Features

Grindex Coated Fibre Discs features and capability

Heavy-duty vulcanised fibre backing

A strong resin bond system on a heavy-duty vulcanised fibre backing gives increased strength, durability and tear resistance. Fibre discs are run on a rubber backing pad at an angle and under pressure; the backing is what stops them tearing at the edge under that load.

Consistent cut rate through the disc life

Grindex designs these for a consistent cut rate and uniform high finish throughout their operating life. An abrasive that cuts fast when new and then glazes makes the operator press harder, which puts heat into the work — and on stainless, heat means discolouration and a passivation problem.

Zirconia for rapid removal

Premium fibre discs for unparalleled performance in applications requiring rapid material removal. Zirconia is tough and self-sharpens under pressure, so it is the choice for heavy weld blending and gas-cut edge dressing.

Aluminium oxide for finish

Best where surface finish is important and grinding pressures are low. The finer grits in aluminium oxide leave a surface that can go to coating or inspection without a further step.

Silicon carbide for non-metals

Most suited to woodworking and glass grinding. Silicon carbide is harder and more friable than aluminium oxide, which suits brittle materials where a tough abrasive would chip rather than cut.

Grits from 24 to 120

Available in grits 24, 36, 60, 80 and 120 across all four diameters. The 24 grit is coarser than anything in the flap disc range, which is what makes fibre discs the choice for the heaviest blending work.

Frequently asked

Grindex Coated Fibre Discs — common questions

What is a fibre disc and how does it differ from a flap disc?

A fibre disc is a single layer of abrasive on a vulcanised fibre backing, run on a rubber backing pad. A flap disc has overlapping abrasive flaps that expose fresh abrasive as they wear. Fibre discs are available in coarser grits (down to 24) and cut more aggressively; flap discs last longer and blend the grinding and finishing steps.

Which fibre disc abrasive should I choose?

Zirconia for rapid material removal on metal. Aluminium oxide where surface finish matters and grinding pressures are low. Silicon carbide for woodworking and glass — not for heavy metal removal.

Do I need a backing pad for fibre discs?

Yes — fibre discs mount on a rubber backing pad on the angle grinder. The backing pad is not listed in the Grindex brochure, so ask us for it alongside the discs; the pad diameter must match the disc.

What grits do Grindex fibre discs come in?

Grits 24, 36, 60, 80 and 120, across diameters of 100, 115, 125 and 178 mm. The 24 grit is the coarsest abrasive in the Grindex coated range.

Can fibre discs be used on gas cut edges?

Yes — gas cut surface blending is one of the stated applications. A coarse zirconia disc takes the dross and drag lines off a flame-cut edge quickly before a finer grit brings the surface up.

Are fibre discs suitable for weld blending?

Yes, weld and braze blending is the primary listed application, along with correcting metal mismatch between plates and removing cladding burrs.
