Features

Grindex Flap Discs features and capability

Grinds like a grinding disc, finishes like a fibre disc

That is Grindex’s own description, and it is the reason flap discs took over this work. A grinding disc removes material but leaves a coarse surface; a fibre disc finishes but removes little. A flap disc does both in one pass, which removes an entire operation and a tool change from the job.

Overlapping flaps expose fresh abrasive

The abrasive is arranged in overlapping flaps, so as the working edge wears the next layer is exposed. The disc therefore cuts at a consistent rate through its life rather than glazing and slowing, which is what makes the cost-per-part competitive despite a higher unit price than a bonded disc.

Two abrasive types for different jobs

Aluminium oxide where surface finish matters and grinding pressures are low. Zirconia where rapid material removal is the priority — zirconia is tougher and self-sharpens under pressure, so it suits heavier work.

Type 27 and Type 29 forms

Type 27 is flat-faced, for work closer to flush and for finishing. Type 29 is conical, which presents the flaps at an angle and gives a more aggressive cut on contoured work and edges. Both are offered across the size range.

Four grits from 36 to 120

Grits 36, 60, 80 and 120. A coarse 36 removes weld reinforcement; a 120 leaves a finish that can go straight to coating or inspection. Running down through the grits in sequence is what produces a finish without deep scratches.

Lowest total cost on demanding work

Grindex states the discs offer superior performance on the toughest and most demanding applications with the lowest total cost. On abrasives, unit price and cost-per-part rarely point the same way — a disc that lasts twice as long and removes one operation wins even at a higher price.

Frequently asked

Grindex Flap Discs — common questions

What is a flap disc used for?

Light stock removal, blending and finishing in a single operation. Grindex describe it as grinding like a grinding disc and finishing like a fibre disc — which is why it replaces two tools on weld blending work.

Should I use zirconia or aluminium oxide flap discs?

Zirconia where rapid material removal is the priority; it is tougher and self-sharpens under pressure, so it suits heavier work. Aluminium oxide where surface finish is important and grinding pressures are low.

What is the difference between Type 27 and Type 29 flap discs?

Type 27 is flat-faced and suits work close to flush and finishing passes. Type 29 is conical, presenting the flaps at an angle for a more aggressive cut on contoured work and edges. Grindex offers both across the size range.

Which grit should I start with for weld blending?

A coarse grit such as 36 to take down weld reinforcement, then step through 60 and 80 to remove the previous scratch pattern, finishing at 120 if the surface is going to coating or inspection. Skipping grits leaves deeper scratches that the finer disc cannot remove.

What sizes do Grindex flap discs come in?

100, 115, 125 and 178 mm, in grits 36, 60, 80 and 120, in both Type 27 and Type 29 and in both aluminium oxide and zirconia.

Can flap discs be used on stainless steel?

Yes — the range is listed for metal and stainless steel, and blending welds on stainless vessels is one of the stated applications. Keep discs used on stainless separate from those used on carbon steel to avoid transferring free iron into the surface.
