Grindex Cutting Discs applications and industries

  • Pipe cutting in cast iron, stainless steel and mild steel — the staple job for a 115 mm or 125 mm disc on a hand grinder.
  • Bar cutting, rail cutting and TMT cutting, including heavy-duty cutting on fixed-stroke machines.
  • Metal plate dimensioning and sheet metal cutting.
  • Foundry gate and riser removal.
  • Notching and sample cutting, where a clean cut matters more than speed.
  • Angle and channel cutting on lower-powered chopsaw machines, using the 300–400 mm double-reinforced large diameter wheels.

Features

Grindex Cutting Discs features and capability

Separate formulations for steel and stainless

The range is split between discs for metal and steel and discs for stainless steel and INOX. The distinction is not marketing: a stainless-specific disc is formulated free of iron, sulfur and chlorine, because contamination transferred from an ordinary disc into an austenitic stainless surface causes rust staining and can initiate corrosion. Using the wrong disc on stainless undoes the material’s whole purpose.

Full size range, 100 mm to 400 mm

Depressed-centre T-27 discs at 3 mm thickness in 100, 115, 125, 180 and 230 mm for angle grinders, and flat T-1 wheels at 3 mm in 300, 355 and 400 mm for chopsaws. T-42 depressed discs are also available — the two sheets in our files cover 115 mm and 180 mm in that type.

Double-reinforced large diameter wheels

The 300–400 mm chopsaw wheels are double reinforced with a design engineered for free cutting on all kinds of pipes, angles and channels, and are suited to lower-power chopsaw machines — where a wheel that loads up stalls the machine rather than cutting.

Manufactured to EN 12413 and OSA certified

The abrasive standard followed is EN 12413, the European safety standard for bonded abrasive products, and the products carry OSA number 16465. OSA certification is the recognised third-party safety mark for abrasives, and it is the thing an HSE department looks for before a disc is allowed on site.

Maximum operating speed stated per size

Every size carries a maximum operating speed of 80 m/s and a maximum rotational speed in rpm that falls as diameter rises — 15300 rpm at 100 mm down to 6700 rpm at 230 mm. Fitting a disc to a grinder whose no-load speed exceeds the disc rating is the classic cause of wheel burst.

Bulk packaging for production use

Packed in corrugated boxes — 100 pieces per box for 115 mm, 40 pieces for 180 mm. Consumption on a production fabrication job is high enough that pack quantity matters to both price and store space.

  • Every size above is held in Abu Dhabi. Quote the product code on your enquiry or LPO — an abrasive is ordered by code and pack quantity, and the Metal and SS/Inox versions of the same diameter are different products with different codes.
  • Use an SS/Inox disc on stainless. Those grades are made free of iron, sulphur and chlorine, because a disc that leaves iron particles embedded in a stainless surface causes rust staining and pitting underneath — in the one material chosen for its corrosion resistance.
  • Grade marking: A is an aluminium oxide abrasive, the number is the grit size and the letter is the hardness grade. The stocked cutting range runs A36Y for the 1 mm thin disc, A30V and A30R for metal and A30S for stainless — a harder grade is specified for the larger 180 mm disc, where rim speed is lower for the same rpm.
  • The 100 mm cutting disc is listed as A22R, which is the grade used across the whole GRINDING range rather than the A30 family used by every other cutting disc here. That may be correct or it may be a slip in the stock list; it is shown as supplied and flagged for confirmation rather than quietly changed.
  • The 1 mm discs are for sheet, thin wall and fast clean cuts; the 3 mm discs are the general-purpose and heavy-duty choice and tolerate far more abuse. Both cut at 90 degrees to the work. Never side-load a cutting disc of either thickness — that is what a grinding disc is for.
  • All six coded sizes carry the same certification: EN 12413 abrasive standard, OSA number 16465, maximum operating speed 80 m/s. The rpm figure differs only because a larger disc reaches the same rim speed at fewer revolutions.

Operating essentials

Setting up and operating the Grindex Cutting Discs

Match the disc speed to the machine

Every disc carries a maximum rotational speed — 15300 rpm at 100 mm falling to 6700 rpm at 230 mm — and a maximum operating speed of 80 m/s. The grinder’s no-load speed must not exceed the disc rating. This is the single most important check before fitting a disc, and it is the one most often skipped.

Use the right disc for stainless

Use the stainless/INOX formulation on austenitic stainless steel, not the general metal disc. Iron, sulfur and chlorine transferred from an ordinary abrasive contaminate the surface and cause rust staining and potential corrosion initiation. On a food, pharmaceutical or process plant fabrication this is a rejection, not a cosmetic issue.

Cut at 90°

The recommended working angle for a cutting disc is 90° to the work. A cutting disc is 3 mm thick and designed to be loaded on its edge; using it at an angle to grind puts a side load on a wheel that was never built for one.

After cutting stainless

Cutting leaves heat tint and discolouration along the cut edge on stainless. Where corrosion resistance matters, that needs removing by pickling and the surface passivating afterwards — cutting cleanly is only the first half of the job.

Frequently asked

Grindex Cutting Discs — common questions

What is the difference between a cutting disc and a grinding disc?

Thickness and intended loading. Grindex cutting discs are 3 mm and designed to be loaded on the edge at 90° to the work. Grinding discs are 6 mm and designed to be used at an angle for stock removal. Using a cutting disc to grind puts a side load on a thin wheel and is a common cause of wheel breakage.

Can I use an ordinary cutting disc on stainless steel?

You should not. Grindex supplies a separate stainless/INOX range because abrasives for general steel can transfer iron, sulfur and chlorine into the stainless surface, causing rust staining and potentially initiating corrosion. On food, pharmaceutical or process plant work that is grounds for rejection.

What speed should my angle grinder be for a 115 mm cutting disc?

The 115 mm disc is rated to a maximum of 13300 rpm, with a maximum operating speed of 80 m/s. Your grinder’s no-load speed must not exceed the disc’s rating. For 180 mm the limit is 8600 rpm (8500 rpm on the T42 data sheet), and for 230 mm it is 6700 rpm.

What sizes do Grindex cutting discs come in?

Depressed centre 3 mm discs in 100, 115, 125, 180 and 230 mm for angle grinders, and flat 3 mm wheels in 300, 355 and 400 mm for chopsaw machines. Both metal and stainless formulations are available across the angle grinder sizes.

Are Grindex discs certified?

The abrasive standard followed is EN 12413, the European safety standard for bonded abrasives, and the products carry OSA number 16465. OSA certification is the recognised third-party safety mark that most HSE departments look for.

How many discs come in a box?

100 pieces per corrugated box for the 115 mm disc and 40 pieces for the 180 mm. Ask us for pack quantities on other sizes.
