Features

Grindex Grinding Discs features and capability

Type 27 depressed centre, 6 mm thick

Type 27 is the depressed-centre form that lets a disc be worked at an angle to the surface without the clamping flange fouling the work. At 6 mm it is built to take the side loading that grinding imposes — which is exactly what a 3 mm cutting disc is not built for.

Three distinct formulations

Discs for metal and steel, discs for stainless steel and INOX, and a fine-back range for both metal and stainless grinding. The stainless version matters because iron, sulfur and chlorine transferred from an ordinary abrasive contaminate an austenitic surface and cause rust staining and potential corrosion initiation.

Built for hand-held grinding

Portable grinding is a manual process where the operator manipulates the machine by hand, predominantly in weld grinding and notching. Grindex states the discs are engineered to offer a combination of performance and value, and the range is built around the Type 27 portable grinder.

Full size range, 100 mm to 230 mm

100 × 6 × 16 mm, and 115, 125, 180 and 230 mm with a 22.23 mm bore — covering every common angle grinder from a 4″ one-handed machine to a 9″ two-handed one.

Maximum speed stated per size

Maximum rotational speed falls as diameter rises: 15300 rpm at 100 mm, 13300 at 115, 12200 at 125, 8600 at 180 and 6700 at 230 mm. The grinder’s no-load speed must never exceed the disc’s rating.

Suits several machine types

Used on electric angle grinders, pneumatic grinders, electric straight grinders and high frequency machines — so one specification covers a workshop running a mix.

  • Every size above is held in Abu Dhabi. Quote the product code on your enquiry or LPO — an abrasive is ordered by code and pack quantity, and the Metal and SS/Inox versions of the same diameter are different products with different codes.
  • All stocked grinding discs are grade A22R. In the standard marking system A is an aluminium oxide abrasive, the number is the grit size and the letter is the hardness grade, so one grade across the range means consistent cutting action whichever diameter a welder picks up.
  • The 125 mm data sheet states 100 pieces per box where the 115 mm states 40 and the 180 mm states 20. A larger disc packed five times deeper than the size below it does not follow, and we treat that figure as unconfirmed. Confirm the pack quantity with your quotation before ordering on it.
  • SS/Inox discs are stocked in 115 mm and 180 mm only. For stainless work in 100 mm or 125 mm, ask us — substituting a Metal disc onto stainless embeds iron particles that rust and pit the surface afterwards.

Operating essentials

Setting up and operating the Grindex Grinding Discs

Check the speed rating first

Match the disc to the machine: the grinder’s no-load speed must not exceed the disc’s maximum rotational speed. A 100 mm disc rated 15300 rpm must never be fitted to a machine running faster, and a large disc on a small fast grinder is the classic wheel-burst scenario.

Work at an angle, not flat

A Type 27 grinding disc is designed to be worked at an angle to the surface, typically 15–30°. Working flat loads the whole face and glazes the wheel; working too steeply concentrates heat and digs in.

Keep stainless separate

Use the stainless/INOX discs on austenitic stainless, and keep them physically separate from discs used on carbon steel. Cross-contamination from a shared disc, or even a shared bench, transfers free iron into the stainless surface and causes rust staining later.

After grinding stainless

Grinding disturbs the chrome oxide passive layer and can embed contamination. Where corrosion resistance matters, the ground area should be passivated afterwards — ASTM A380 treats grinding as one of the conditions requiring it.

Frequently asked

Grindex Grinding Discs — common questions

What is a Type 27 grinding disc?

Type 27 is the depressed-centre form, where the centre of the disc is recessed so the mounting flange sits below the working face. That lets the disc be worked at an angle to the surface without the flange fouling the work, which is what makes it the standard form for portable weld grinding.

Can I use a grinding disc to cut?

It is the wrong tool. A grinding disc is 6 mm and designed for stock removal at an angle; a cutting disc is 3 mm and designed for edge loading at 90°. Using a 6 mm grinding disc to cut is slow and wasteful, and using a 3 mm cutting disc to grind is dangerous because of the side load.

Why do I need a separate grinding disc for stainless steel?

Because abrasives for general steel can transfer iron, sulfur and chlorine into the stainless surface. That contamination causes rust staining and can initiate corrosion in service, which defeats the point of specifying stainless at all. Grindex supplies a dedicated stainless/INOX formulation.

What is a fine back grinding disc?

Grindex lists fine back products as a separate range for use on both metal and stainless steel grinding, in the same Type 27 form and the same 100–230 mm sizes. Ask us which range suits your finish requirement.

What speed should the grinder be for a 230 mm disc?

A 230 mm disc is rated to a maximum of 6700 rpm. The grinder’s no-load speed must not exceed that. Smaller discs allow higher speeds — 15300 rpm at 100 mm, 13300 at 115 mm, 12200 at 125 mm and 8600 at 180 mm.

Can Grindex discs be used on pneumatic grinders?

Yes — the range is listed for electric angle grinders, pneumatic grinders, electric straight grinders and high frequency machines. Check the machine’s speed against the disc rating in every case.
